Bob Goldsmith grew up in metro Detroit, and attended the University of Michigan for college (BA 1983) and law school (JD 1986).
He worked with a firm in Southfield MI for
about a year -- but then he started his own
solo law practice in Southfield in 1988 and has practiced solo for more than 30 years.
Bob moved his practice to downtown
Detroit in 2002.
Bob also runs a company that gives great
tours of Detroit.
Bob works out of his apartment, and does
not have a secretary. The low overhead is
what allows him to charge lower fees than
attorneys at a big firm usually charge.
Generally you would be hiring Mr Goldsmith on an hourly rate basis.
The hourly rate will be provided in advance.
A retainer is often required at the start. It wil be applied toward the
first few hours worked. For example, in a matter where the hourly rate
is $90 per hour, if a retainer of $450 is required, it would be applied to
cover the first five hours worked.
For some matters a flat fee arrangement may be agreed upon -- like a
fee of a certain amount for drafting a simple will, general durable power
of attorney, and a designation of patient advocate for health care.
In those situations, full or partial payment may be required in advance.
